Job Description

Peer Counselor, under supervision, in collaboration with staff, consumers and other caregivers in planning and implementing treatment plans, identify patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) to treatment and ongoing care. Provide direct services to patients with SUD in emergency department settings. Empower peers to advocate for themselves, resolve issues or problems and plan for their futures by serving as a role model.

Examples of Typical Tasks:
  • Working in the medical emergency department on a behavioral health team, collaborating with medical providers.
  • With the supervision of a social worker, providing timely and complete assessment of social factors that impact on all patients assigned and planning appropriate interventions.
  • Providing concrete supportive services to patients and families.
  • Providing information about community resources and appropriate aftercare referrals.
  • Escorting patients into the community and making home visits as needed.
  • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Working closely with related social and community agencies.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary Performance Improvement Projects.
  • Required to do electronic documentation.
  • Other tasks that may be assigned.
  • Rotating schedule; must be flexible with working evening, overnight, and/or weekend hours on a regular basis.


Minimum Qualifications
- CRPA-P or full CRPA is required

Assignment Level I
1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; and
2. Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized peer counselor/specialist training program which meets the training requirements for a Peer Advocacy Organization as mandated by the State of New York Office of Mental Health in their Official Policy Manual. The training program must be at least six months in duration; or
3. One year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of mental health services as a peer counselor/specialist, peer advocate or in a related human services area.

Assignment Level II
In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Assignment Level I, assignment to Level II requires:
1. One additional year of experience as described in three (3) above.
