Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Pharmacy Technician to support the pharmacists by preparing medications or dispensing to various wards, treatment malls, and clinics using the electronic health record (One Mind), the pharmacy automation equipment (Omnicell), and a unit dose distribution system; use the One Mind (OM) electronic medical record (EMR) in order to process medication orders (new orders, order changes, Leave of Absence (LOA) orders), medication refills, and supplemental drug requests; use Connect-RX automation system software in order to stock/restock the AcuDose Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs); perform cart fill using the Robot-Rx robot; and perform basics of repackaging using the Auto-Print machine.

The Pharmacy Technician will also perform the basics of ADCs (including restocking, reconciling, troubleshooting, and tracking/removal of expired medications); process claims for Medicare Part-D patients, which includes billing, correcting, reversing, and resubmitting claims; perform assigned work inspections (of medication rooms) on a monthly basis to ensure compliance with Pharmacy policies and procedures; and perform the OM tasks necessary for the cart filling process.

Minimum Qualifications

- high school diploma or equivalent
- extensive previous experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or retail setting
- must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) as recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
- must be registered with the VaBOP as a pharmacy technician
- must be willing to obtain 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years
- familiarity with the generic and trade names of drugs
- ability to read and interpret prescriber's medication orders
- ability to work in an environment requiring both speed and accuracy
- good typing skills and familiarity with medical terminology
- ability to communicate with other healthcare professionals and project confidence and good will
