Purpose

To perform journey-level plumbing and related trade functions in a mechanical utility distribution environment. Responsible for providing journey-level craftsmanship in the mechanical maintenance and repair of utility mains and associated systems.

Responsibilities
  • Assist supervisor in planning, estimating, and coordinating work with building occupants and other UT stakeholders. Scheduling and assigning work, relaying instructions and performing on-site inspections of finished work. Inspect finished work for conformity to specifications and standards. Report and coordinate work status to supervisor. Provide feedback to supervisor on staff performance. Attend construction meetings in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Maintain records of equipment repair. Proficient in use of a computer, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.). Complete work orders and other equipment documentation using an integrated work management system. Analyze computer-generated work orders and assist with computer database entries. Record information such as job time data, photographs and as-built installation drawings.
  • Regularly perform work typical of the craft and/or job classification of those workers in the group. Perform work in accordance with established safety procedures. Work in conjunction with trades or craft personnel in support of systems within buildings, power plant, chilling stations, utility tunnels or other underground utilities. Responsible for shop tools and obtaining materials related to the specific job performed.
  • Responsible for relaying instructions, scheduling, and assigning work in the absence of the supervisor at the work site. Lead and give direction to skilled technicians and helpers in the work crew. Motivate and ensure workers meet production expectations and quality standards.
  • Carry and respond to calls on a UT-provided cell phone during work hours and on-call hours. Drive a UT vehicle. Maintain acceptable driving record as required by UT System Policy UTS157 Section 2.5.4
  • Follow all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, take required safety training, and identify and report safety hazards. Perform work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents. Abide by Utilities and Energy Management's set of core values: Safety, Respect, Integrity, Reliability, Teamwork, and Excellence. Informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies as related to equipment and corrects as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Diploma (High School) or GED. Three years of experience in skilled level repair and maintenance of electrical, industrial, mechanical or utility distribution equipment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrate good communication skills. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Commercial Driving License (CDL). Ability to work well within a team environment. Ability to operate a backhoe, bobcat and other shop equipment. Five years of experience in skilled water meter repairs and testing. Five years of experience in skilled pump repairs and maintenance. Experience troubleshooting basic electrical motor control components.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
