Description of Work
This postdoctoral research associate position will be associated with a research program under the direction of Dr. Carl Nelson, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, in robotics and mechanical design with some emphasis on medical applications. This successful candidate is expected to be highly motivated and play an active role in leadership and growth of the lab's research pipeline. The lab currently includes approximately nine (9) researchers (one faculty, one doctoral student, three MS students, and several undergraduate students, assisted by a research engineer). This postdoctoral research associate will have opportunities to be involved with funding agencies and industry needs to develop new research efforts around robotics, mechanical design, and relevant applications, including but not limited to healthcare. This position will be required to work with technology and equipment as described below. We are looking for an ambitious researcher who is looking to use this opportunity to grow towards the next level of research.

This position includes the following responsibilities:
  • Conduct independent research in robotics and mechanical design.
  • Utilize various mechatronics and robotics hardware and software (e.g., CAD , Matlab, motor control, CNC /3D printing, machine/hand tools) in research efforts as applicable to the projects.
  • Manage the operation and maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Organize and prepare reports for sponsors, and present progress updates to sponsors.
  • Supervise student research assistants on a day-to-day basis and interface with collaborators.
  • Collaborate with researchers from different disciplines, including engineering, computing, and healthcare professions.
  • Participate in manuscript writing/preparation, conference talks/posters, manuscript/proposal review, and proposal writing.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience with robotics design, development, and testing.
  • Demonstrated success in carrying out research and disseminating results.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with healthcare applications.
  • Experience in student mentoring, leadership, and proposal writing.
