The University of Virginia seeks a post-doctoral research associate for the newly established National Security Data and Policy Institute. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Phil Potter (Professor of Politics and Public Policy and Executive Director of the NSD&PI) and will provide research support and coordination for a set of Institute deliverables with a focus on counterintelligence. The deliverables require collaborative work with research teams across the University including the School of Data Science and the Biocomplexity Institute. The post-doctoral research associate will be responsible for training and supervising student workers and will collaborate on original research and white papers. Post-doctoral associates are also expected to maintain an independent research agenda. This is a full-time in-person position, with a negotiable flex schedule after the first two months. In-person attendance at meetings and events will be required throughout the year.

Specific Duties:

The post-doctoral research associate will support the Executive Director on key projects including but not exclusive to academic articles and books, policy white papers, and government reports. The individual occupying this role will be responsible for conducting original research under the direction of principal investigators, editing research products and leading student research teams.

Other responsibilities may include:
  • Conducting data analysis related to new and ongoing research projects
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of research protocols
  • Collaborating with fellow researchers within and outside of the Institute
  • Presenting research findings at conferences and professional meetings
  • Assisting in the training and mentorship of student researchers
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Politics, Economics, Psychology, Government, Regional Studies in China or Russia, Data Science, History or a related area within the past six (6) years.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to collaboratively work with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders
  • Applicants with a background in foreign policy and international affairs will be a major asset in the position
  • Security clearance eligibility is preferred
Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Position Details:

The anticipated start date is November 1, 2024, and this position will remain open until filled. The initial appointment is for one year, however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance. This is an exempt level, benefited position. This is a salaried position at $62,000 per year plus benefits . This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
