The University of Virginia seeks a data science researcher for the newly established National Security Data & Policy Institute. This role will report to the Institute Research Program Director and will provide research support and coordination for Institute deliverables. The deliverables require collaborative work with research teams across the University and will be responsible for training and supervising student workers. This is a full-time in-person position, with a negotiable flex schedule after the first two months. In-person attendance at meetings and events will be required throughout the year.

Responsibilities include:
  • Understand all phases of the analytic process including data collection, preparation, modeling, evaluation, and deployment.
  • Explore and examine data from multiple disparate sources to identify, provide reporting on, and analyze trends in the data.
  • Establish links across existing structured and unstructured data sources and find new, interesting data correlations.
  • Develop statistical, mathematical and predictive models to build the algorithms necessary to ask the right questions and find the right answers.
  • General project management to stay appraised of all assigned deliverables and their status across research teams.
  • Visualize and report data findings creatively in a variety of visual formats.
  • Analyze and interpret the results of project deliverables to create streamlined and process-efficient alternatives, enhancements, or modifications.
The Institute offers a flexible working environment. A remote schedule is negotiable. In-person presence will be required at meetings throughout the year.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • US Citizenship
  • Education: Master's Degree
  • Experience: At least three years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Possess or be eligible to be granted US government security clearance
Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.

About the Position:

The anticipated start date is October 30, 2024, however this position will remain open until filled. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. This is an exempt level, benefited position.
