Minimum Qualifications
This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:


Power Plant Technician Senior :
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years experience performing a maintenance or operations craft in a power plant or heavy industrial environment.
Associates Degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
None.

Power Plant Specialist:
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and five (5) years experience performing a maintenance or operations craft in a power plant or heavy industrial environment.
Associates Degree may be substituted for two years of experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
None.

Power Plant Specialist Senior
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and eight (8) years experience performing a maintenance or operations craft in a power plant or heavy industrial environment.
Associates Degree may be substituted for two years of experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
None.

Notes to Applicants
This position will require under minimal supervision, the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment problems related to electric generating plants in the craft of electrical and or instrumentation and control. Requires mastery in electrical craft or instrumentation and control craft through the power production job progression program. This position is considered essential to maintain critical operations and employees in this position will be required to report to work even in the event of bad weather, natural disaster, or other unforeseen circumstances that necessitate an emergency closure of City operations.

The minimum physical demands for working in this position are: Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, inclement weather, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor/dust hazards, electrical hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying/lifting up to a minimum of 50 lbs, and indoor activity.

The work hours for this position will vary depending on business need, and may require overtime hours extending beyond the end of the regularly scheduled work shift and on weekends.

This position requires Arc Flash Safety training.

This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with programming and testing of microprocessor based digital protective relays.


  • Experience with a craft position in a power plant or similar industrial facility with either medium and high voltage switchgear or electrical distribution.
  • Experience with high voltage motor maintenance.
