The Product Safety Department is responsible for building the safety assessments of the future at L'Oréal. The individual will serve as critical member of the team responsible for the safety evaluation, testing and documentation of raw materials and finished formulations developed by, or acquired by L'Oréal USA, in compliance with global regulations and guidelines. This is a technical role that will require in-depth working knowledge of toxicology and risk assessment principles. Computational toxicology and new approach methodology (NAMs) expertise (e.g., in silico predictions, PBPK modeling, Toxico-Cheminformatics, etc.) is highly desirable.

L'Oréal USA iscurrently seeking a talented, innovative, and experienced Principal Scientist to join our Safety,Regulatory, Claims and Microbiology (SRCM) team located at our Clark, New Jersey Research & Innovation facility. This position will be dedicated to supporting the work of the Medical Incubator Center (MIC), a new collaborative initiative between L'Oréal Research & Innovation and L'Oréal's Dermatologic to fast-track disruptive innovations for the medical aesthetic and physician dispensing channel (focusing on the Skin Better Science and SkinCeuticals brands) and to continue building L'Oréal's thought leadership in this space.

As a Principal Scientist in our Product Safety &Toxicology team, your main responsibilities are:
  • Work in close collaboration (locally & internationally) with cross-functional teams, including chemists, scientists, and business partners while serving as a primary point of contact and coordinator of novel and innovative projects within the SRCM department.
  • Provide support to our newly created Medical Incubator Center (MIC). This initiative is a collaboration between L'Oréal's Research & Innovation and the Dermatologic Beauty Division to fast-track disruptive innovations for the medical aesthetic and physician dispensing channel.
  • Have direct/hands-on responsibilities of conducting safety evaluation of novel chemical/biological ingredients as well as other innovative medical technologies.
  • Play a leading role in coordinating efforts within SRCM to leverage existing internal expertise and build/develop external expertise.
  • Work with senior management on safety-related issues in terms of company responses and positions on our products and safety protocols.
  • Develop a strong interface with all global stakeholders, particularly R&I and Business divisions.
  • Provide the expertise required to defend Group's safety policy and projects before the relevant authorities and stakeholders.
  • Assist in working towards the harmonization of safety testing protocols and determinations of the necessary evaluations needed for raw materials, finished products, and other novel technologies.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary projects initiated within the Worldwide SRCM network.


To Succeed in this Position, You Have:
  • A completed Ph.D. in Pharmacology/Toxicology or closely related field required
  • 10+ years of progressive technical and leadership experience.
  • Proven track record in providing technical leadership in field of expertise.
  • Deep technical experience/expertise in the field of product safety, primary experience in pharma/medical field highly desirable.
  • Expertise in the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and strategies in supporting the safety of new materials/technologies is highly desirable.
  • DABT or ERT board-certified is a plus.
  • Strong political acumen, strategic thinking, and transversal leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to successfully engage cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to analyze and summarize complex safety-related issues and initiatives for key business target audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities, paying particular attention to deadlines and agreed-to deliverables.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and guidelines related to safety assessment and toxicology will be a plus.
  • Creative problem solving and proven leadership skills with a strong results orientation, positive "hands on" attitude and a sense of urgency to get things done with demonstrated grace and even temperament under pressure.
  • Strong computer and digital experience are a plus.
  • The ability to be onsite, in the office as this is an essential function of the position (required)
  • Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis, without the need for legal sponsorship now or in the future (required)
