PURPOSE

The Program Assistant organizes and implements programs designed to meet the individual needs of the resident. The program is intended to fulfill basic psychological, intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs while promoting self-esteem in a caring, nurturing environment. The Programming Assistant supports and assists the Programming Director in all necessary programming. S/he safely uses all utilized equipment when planning or implementing programming.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Resident Care - Programs
• Assists in the development and implementation of an innovative daily program for residents
• Leads and implements one-on-ones, small group and large group activities according to the programming schedule
• Supports, encourages and directs independent activity pursuits, both individually and in small groups
• Supports the resident's abilities by understanding that all aspects of care can be viewed as an activity
Resident Care - General
• Demonstrates knowledge about residents in regard to background, participation needs, physical abilities, interests, cognitive capacity and attention span capability
• Communicates any changes in the residents condition or behavior pattern to Program Director
• The Van Driver is responsible for providing transportation for community residents. S/he assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing all activities requiring van transportation as appropriate.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintains vehicles in accordance with warranty requirements and/or internal maintenance plan to ensure safe, working order
• Represents the community with a positive attitude and pride when interacting with potential residents and families
• Develops and practices the "30-second commercial' and uses it to greet visitors
• Monitors individual resident needs in ambulation
• Must be hands-on with residents getting into and out of van to ensure their safety
• Acts as Activity Assistant when on excursions; stays with group at all times except for when parking the van
• Assists in planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating activities
• Participates in in-service training as required by state regulations

Job Requirements:

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Displays computer proficiency with working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software
• Possesses excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to relate in a positive and professional way to a diverse resident and associate population
• Shows familiarity and experience using a wide variety of equipment related to the recreational programs of elders and the disabled, including, but not limited to, craft supplies, VCR, stereo, stove, and food preparation equipment
• Maintains a high level of confidentiality regarding residents, staff, and the community
• Shows an ability to relate to and perform job functions for the elderly in a positive and efficient manner
• Shows a consistent ability to coordinate multiple tasks, demonstrates a positive attitude, and works well under pressure

HARBOR REQUIREMENTS - (only for Programming Assistants who will be working in Harbor)

• Pursues educational development in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders
• Possesses training and knowledge of Alzheimer's and related dementias
• Demonstrates understanding of the emotional stress of having a loved one with dementia by responding professionally and sensitively to the family's needs.
• Possesses knowledge of policies in the Harbor Family Handbook

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Physical stamina and ability to assist residents or lift residents where needed and in emergencies.
