Summary

This detail opportunity is located in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office of Communications (OCOM), Media Affairs Division. This position informs the media and other external audiences of OJP's mission and goals and explains the wide range of programs and activities that comprise OJP.

Duties

As a (Public Affairs Specialist-Media Officer) you will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Plans and manages public affairs programs involving issues that are controversial and of significant public or congressional interest, such as programs involving cost overruns, untested technology and environmental or safety concerns.
  • Serves as senior advisor to Agency management on media affairs activities and programs to include newsroom management, providing support to the Office of the Assistant Attorney General, and proactively engaging with the media.
  • Develops policies, programs, and procedures governing information dissemination within the Agency.
  • Plans and directs all aspects of OJP newsroom activities including reviewing and advising on team responses to inquiries.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions and specialized experience, as defined below.

To be considered for this position as a DETAIL at the GS-14 grade level, you must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to potentially qualify for a detail and hold the same grade level you are currently applying for.

Specialized Experience:

Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Examples of specialized experience include:

-Manages digital content strategies, messages, product development and dissemination.

-Provides insight and recommendations about customer information needs based on gathering and analyzing a variety of data.

-Plans and manages proactive communication programs involving issues that are controversial or of significant public or Congressional interest.

-Makes recommendations regarding the dissemination of information to correct misperceptions and enhance public understanding on key issues.

  • This position has a duty station of Washington, D.C. The selectee will be required to physically report to the OJP office building at least four (4) days per bi-weekly pay period and may incorporate leave and official travel plans into this reporting requirement. The office director or supervisor may request the selectee's presence in the office more frequently, as determined by the needs of the office. The selectee will be responsible for covering all commuting-related travel expenses.
