Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.
Provides public relations support for a program with agency wide service responsibilities to include planning, needs assessment, design, implementation and evaluation of public/media relations, fund raising, publication and promotional services and programs to other public, private sector groups and media representatives. Provides guidance to field staff on program, work unit or office public relations activities, serves as mentor to other staff charged with carrying out public relations activities. Some administrative responsibilities for reporting, monitoring costs, and procurement may be present. May supervise other administrative or public relations staff. Work is carried out independently, working from broad guidelines. Occasional overnight travel. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required in English. Excellent verbal and written communication skills preferred in Spanish.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in television, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, health education or comparable experience.
Skill in writing, creating pamphlets, newsletters & other literature, theme development, speech writing/talking points essential.
Effective public speaking & customer service skills critical.
Ability to plan, develop and implement a statewide agency public information education/preparedness campaign.
Ability to communicate effective, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of WordPress, Excel, MS-Word, Adobe Creative Suite and internet a plus.
Experience working with executive personnel and handling competing priorities essential.
Valid driver's license.

Additional Considerations

Knowledge of public health and communications principles and practice.
Bilingual preferred.
