Support and maintain the law enforcement two-way radio and data communications systems for the Wisconsin State Patrol as a Public Safety Radio Communications Field Service Technician (Network Communications Systems Analyst-Advanced).

There are two vacancies, one will be headquartered at the Southwest Region, DeForest Post at 911 W North Street, DeForest, WI and the other will be headquartered at the North West Region, Eau Claire Post: 5005 HWY 53 South, Eau Claire, WI.

Position Summary

Public Safety Radio Communications Field Service Technicians use Electronics, Radio Frequency, and IT knowledge and skills to support complex two-way radio and data networks. These positions also support telecommunications and public safety equipment in vehicles to maintain the communication services for public safety agencies in Wisconsin, including Wisconsin State Patrol, DMA, DNR, FBI, and Capitol Police along with many other federal, state, municipal and tribal public safety agencies.

These positions identify, diagnose, troubleshoot, and support the radio frequency, data network, and IT systems across the state for State Patrol, DNR, and Wisconsin Interoperable System for Communications (WISCOM). WISCOM is a statewide, mission-critical, public safety-grade first responder telecommunication system that includes network devices (switches, routers, etc.), telecommunications systems (microwave radios, base stations, repeaters, etc.), emergency power equipment and various other devices.

This position will maintain a segment of the statewide two-way radio and data network across the region, coordinating with other technicians to integrate their region of operation into the entire network/telecommunications system. Technicians maintain systems and integrate equipment in the region, while assisting in the maintenance and implementation of systems statewide. This position assists in coordinating maintenance schedules, monitoring inventory, and calibrating test and diagnostic instruments.

Successful applicants should have knowledge of radio frequency (RF) radio systems, electronics, and IT networking.

Successful applicants in the past have come from:
  • The commercial two-way radio industry
  • Municipal government agencies with experience in two-way radio systems
  • Commercial telecommunications industry
  • Military with training and experience in radio frequencies and use of two-way radios
  • Persons with education courses and degrees in Electronics and IT related field

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (06-63) with an annual salary of $60,320-$74,880, plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Successful applicants must have the ability to drive a state issued vehicle and independently respond to emergencies and routine maintenance along with supporting communications systems located in remote locations 24/7/365. This will include responding to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and working alone at night in remote locations.

Employees will be assigned a state-owned full-size sport utility vehicle or truck that may be kept at their home location (up to 45 miles from headquarters).

Sign-on Bonus of $2000 for eligible employees who agree to remain in the position for one year. $1000 will be paid on first paycheck and $1000 will be paid after completing probation. Eligible employees cannot be current state employees or have previous state service within the last five years in a permanent position, within executive branch, or non-UW position.

Qualifications

Candidates must identify all the following:

  • Coursework/training in electronics technology related topics such as: system maintenance, two-way radio communications, AC or DC electronics; or experience in technical service or technical support related activities; or experience in a position in an electronics technology related field.
    • Technical service encompasses: customer service, preventative maintenance, servicing of electronics or telecommunications equipment.
  • Experience installing, diagnosing, trouble shooting, or maintaining electronics equipment or communications systems.
