Registered Nurse- Job Description

FLSA: Non-exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the overall operation and optimal quality of care for the residents on the assigned unit. Follows all health, sanitary and infection control policies and maintains established standards of practice set forth by the facility's administration and Nursing policies and procedures.

TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: Unit Manager / RN Supervisor

TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUBORDINATES: Certified Nursing Assistants

POSITION REQUIREMENTS - Education / Experience

Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Connecticut.

Minimum of one year of education or experience in geriatric nursing or rehabilitation preferred.

CPR certified.

Ability to read, write and comprehend English; ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Fluent knowledge of the MS Office suite and other office equipment.

Ability to work hours as scheduled based on the requirements of the position assignment.

Working Conditions: Works in an appropriately lighted and ventilated environment.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day, proper body mechanics required. Ability to perform physically demanding work involving frequent bending, stooping, turning, stretching, and reaching above the shoulders are involved.

Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics/equipment that will enable these senses to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Administers medication and treatments according to the physician's orders.

Assumes responsibility for ordering medications.

Transcribes, documents, and implements physician's orders.

Makes nursing assessments during each shift.

Gives daily shift report to Certified Nursing Assistants assigned to the unit prior to the start of the shift. Reviews written daily assignments for each resident on assigned unit. Assures assignments are completed before the end of the shift.

Gives and takes nursing report on assigned unit. Communicates essential information to appropriate parties.

Makes rounds on assigned residents at least once every two hours.

Collaborates with Care Plan Coordinator to develop and maintain nursing care plans and update these plans on a regular basis and as the resident's condition changes.

Attends and participates in interdisciplinary resident care conferences as requested.

Assists the attending physician with rounds and special procedures as needed.

Participates in the yearly written evaluations of nursing assistants and documents accurately their strengths, weaknesses and the steps that need to be taken to improve their performance.

Assists the Staff Development Coordinator with orientation and on-the-job training for new nursing personnel as needed.

Collaborates with nursing supervisor in documenting disciplinary concerns for nursing assistants on designated shifts, including reprimands, oral and written warnings, and recommending the suspension or discharge of an employee.

Notifies nursing supervisor and resident's physician and family of a change in the resident's condition or an accident/incident involving the resident.

Assumes any duties that are assigned by the RN Supervisor/ADNS to provide optimal achievable quality resident care.

Assumes all responsibilities of the R.N. Supervisor in his/her absence or as directed by the ADNS.

Performs other related duties and attends meetings as may be deemed necessary by Supervisor / Administrator and or Director.
