Job Duties:

In partnership with people with disabilities, the Division of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) assists individuals with disabilities to make informed choices that will maximize their employment through coordinated service delivery. DRS staff will assist the Workforce Network to deliver quality workforce services to individuals with disabilities who want to work and employers seeking to hire them to the extent that this provides benefit to the DRS program.

This position serves as Rehabilitation Engineering Technician (RET) for the Division of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) / Rehabilitation Technology Services' (RTS) statewide team.

We are seeking a Rehabilitation Engineering Technician (Wage) will provide mobile rehabilitation services (MRE) to DARS clients and community partners, with priority given to active DARS clients and employers that hire DARS clients.

This position will be housed at the Rehabilitation Engineering Shop in Roanoke under the supervision of the Rehabilitation Engineer. The incumbent will provide direct support to the main Rehabilitation Engineering (RE) shop hub in Roanoke, to the Roanoke Rehabilitation Engineer, the Southwest and Northern District AT Specialists. This position will provide support to the statewide Rehabilitation Technology Services team projects and other RE shops as requested.

The incumbent provides MRE services statewide and include project design, adaptive technology purchase and installation and custom design and fabrication where off the shelf solutions are unavailable.

RET's supports statewide RTS team members to remove barriers for DRS clients in home, school, and/or work settings. RETs serve on an interdisciplinary team of RTS professionals to include Assistive Technology Specialists (ATS) / Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Rehabilitation Engineers (REs). RETs are responsible for customized technology services and maintenance to include: custom fabrication of tools, jigs and devices that create AT solutions to support employment goals; onsite support of client home, vehicle and worksite modification projects assigned to RE and/or ATS; maintenance of the rehabilitation engineering shop hubs; and maintenance of mobile rehabilitation engineering units (MUs) and equipment.

To meet the expectations of the job, the incumbent must have access to personally identifiable and confidential information about agency consumers and/or agency staff.

Frequent in-state travel to support RTS program projects and Rehabilitation Engineering shop hubs statewide. Frequent overnight travel is expected.

This is a wage (part-time) position and will work on average of #24-29 hours a week and can't exceed 1500 hours during their employment year. This position does not include health insurance, retirement or leave.

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

Knowledge/Experience:
  • A valid State driver's license is necessary.
  • Experience conducting detailed project inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to use and maintain general hand and power tools, industrial sewing machines and welding equipment.

Ability/Skills:
  • Ability to install adaptive equipment in a variety of environments including client homes and worksites.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions with attention to detail and have good communication skills.
  • Must have a willingness to learn and accept direction from RTS team members assigned to client projects and other state agency or community consults.
  • Individual must be able to multi-task and manage a varied workload.
  • The ability to lift and maneuver fifty (50) lbs. from ground level is needed to achieve the above-mentioned tasks.
Additional Considerations
  • Demonstrated experience related to custom fabrication, woodworking, metalworking, upholstery and welding in a shop environment.
  • Experience providing rehabilitation engineering services for individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience in an engineering and technology occupation.
