The Vlaisavljevich Research Group (https://ultrasound-lab.beam.vt.edu/) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech is seeking candidates for a Research Assistant Professor position. The research focus of this position will be to expand the theoretical and experimental focused ultrasound research projects conducted in the Vlaisavljevich Lab. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to join the Vlaisavljevich Research Group, contribute to current externally funded projects, engaging in training, coaching and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, obtain externally funded grants, and collaborate with other faculty at Virginia Tech working on focused ultrasound research projects. The candidate would work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and clinicians on the development of new focused ultrasound technologies. We are seeking a motivated, creative individual interested in working within a team environment on projects ranging from early-stage technology development to pre-clinical trials in small and large animals, including ongoing veterinary clinical trials. The selected candidate should be comfortable approaching challenging problems and working independently or in interdisciplinary teams while mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
Primary responsibilities will include:
-Contributing significantly to current externally funded projects in the Vlaisavljevich Lab including the development of histotripsy methods for the non-invasive ablation liver, kidney, pancreatic, breast, bone, and brain tumors
-Advancing the development of hardware and software for custom focused ultrasound transducers and electronic driving systems for various ongoing histotripsy projects
-Developing research proposals for obtaining externally sponsored research (as PI or Co-PI)
-Conducting independent research on histotripsy or other focused ultrasound technologies
-Contributing significantly to the design, execution, and management of projects
-Developing publications for journals and conferences
-Contributing significantly to the training, coaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students
-Supervising project personnel
Required Qualifications
-Ph.D. biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, or other closely related fields.
-Demonstrated excellence in research and scholarship, or high potential for such excellence
-Ability to articulate a coherent research agenda and identify potential funding sources
-Ability to work independently under limited or no supervision as well as within an interdisciplinary research group
-Experience with the design, fabrication, and use of focused ultrasound systems, particularly for use in histotripsy or other high intensity focused ultrasound regimes.
-Previous experience with FUS transducer design, ultrasound physics, phased-array transducers, image-guided cancer ablation, or ultrasound neuromodulation
-Credentials commensurate with a research assistant professor rank.
Preferred Qualifications
- Research experience (academic or industry) in areas related to current research projects in the Vlaisavljevich lab including transducer design, ultrasound physics, phased-array transducers, image-guided cancer ablation, DNA extraction, or neuromodulation.
-Experience with animal testing using focused ultrasound devices
-Strong programming skills (Verilog/VHDL, JavaScript, Python, Matlab, C++) and experience in circuit design, ECAD and PCB design, and digital logic
-Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate students research activities
-Good project management skills including ability to perform experimental work, publish papers, and work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team environment
-Experience working on veterinary or human clinical trials using focused ultrasound
