Research Associate, Department of Neuroscience
Charlottesville, Virginia
Employer: Virginia Jobs
Industry: Research
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time
The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a mass spectrometry focused Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the lab of Dr. Sarah Flowers. The Flowers Lab (flowerslab.org) is focused on Alzheimer's disease with an interest in APOE, the most significant genetic risk factor for sporadic AD. We utilize mass spectrometry to understand how carbohydrate modifications are altered in AD, and use induced pluripotent stem cells and clinical samples to harness this knowledge for the identification of AD before pathology as well as therapeutic targets to stop the progression to AD. The lab is NIH-funded and equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation.
Our new lab member will join and contribute to a welcoming and supportive environment driven to carry out fundamental and translational research to improve AD patient outcomes. UVA is home to a strong and connected Postdoc community and the successful candidate will have support from the Flowers Lab, the Department of Neuroscience, the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia, and a wide array of UVA programs for professional development. They will expand their MS and biochemistry skills, become confident in the AD field, and improve grant and manuscript writing skills.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience. A PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Neuroscience or related field conferred by the start date. Experience with Mass spectrometry sample preparation, instrumentation operation and method development preferably using Sciex instrumentation, and data analysis. Previous research experience focused on quantitative mass spectrometry, glycomics, glycoproteomics or advanced glycation end products is ideal. Previous experience in Alzheimer's disease, APOE research or carbohydrate cell metabolism would be highly regarded. The ability to work independently, collaborate with a range of scientists and work as part of a diverse and supportive group is essential.
Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. This position has a start date of July 1, 2023 and will remain open until filled. This is an exempt-level, benefitted position. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A pre-employment health screening is required. This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.
