The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Computational Thermodynamics and Kinetics Group led by Prof. Bi-Cheng Zhou. The focus of the research will be the development of theories and software programs for computational thermodynamics of materials with chemical short-range order.

The successful candidate will conduct studies on multiple projects simultaneously and will possess extensive and demonstrated technical skills and experience with various computational modeling techniques of materials, such as first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), Cluster expansion, Cluster Variation Method (CVM), CALPHAD modeling, and so on. Programming skills with Python/Fortran/C++ are a significant plus. The applicant would also be expected to interact with graduate students and contribute to publications.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related fields, including a thesis dissertation with emphasis on first-principles calculations and/or CALPHAD modeling, is required. Evidence of good written and oral English language skills to interact with various sponsors, attention to detail, good record keeping, strong analytical skills, and previous experience mentoring junior researchers (undergraduate and graduate students).
