Summary

The Research Development Manager will work with other colleagues in the office to identify challenges, develop tools and processes to aid faculty, and contribute to moving initiatives and strategies forward. The position requires the ability to multi-task, exhibit flexibility with assigned projects, and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders in a highly professional manner.

Overview of the UMMS Office of Research:
The primary mission of the University of Michigan Medical School Office of Research is to foster an environment of innovation and efficiency that serves the Medical School research community and supports biomedical science from insight to impact. To that end, our team is constantly striving to enhance the research enterprise, including maintaining an investigator-focused infrastructure, facilitating and diversifying investigators' avenues for funding, and streamlining research processes.

The Grant Services & Analysis Office, a unit within the Medical School Office of Research, serves several support functions for the faculty of Michigan Medicine. We are keenly interested in creating support for faculty, particularly related to creating a successful environment for external funding for research and simplifying administrative barriers to conducting research.

Responsibilities*

The position:
  • Is responsible for providing leadership and professional expertise or services in research development; managing a unit with 5 staff, directly supporting faculty seeking to obtain funding. This will include interviewing, selecting and training of employees in the new large scale proposal support group, as well as planning and directing work - especially in research development programs of R01 Boot Camp and limited submissions.
  • Recommends the strategic direction and providing leadership in the operational changes related to Research Development activity and support for Michigan Medicine. Serves as a member of the Grant Services & Analysis leadership team.
  • Leads Michigan Medicine initiatives in educating the research development community / runs an RD work group to address needs of community.
  • Leads / Performs key educational activities for faculty on research development topics or coordinates with Faculty Development related to these needs
  • Sets budget for R01 Boot Camp, Limited Submission / BMRC, and large-scale proposal development activities.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively to identify opportunities, metrics, and challenges and act on them in a timely fashion. Additionally, they will participate in a dynamic environment and must have excellent organizational, planning, and communication skills. They will be lead a high-impact, fast-moving team in research development.

Required Qualifications*

  • 5+ years of experience in research development activities.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Experience making sound, independent judgments; handling complex situations; and balancing competing priorities. Requires independent judgment to search out appropriate course of action within the context of policies and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of Sponsor and University research development resources.
  • Stellar interpersonal/organizational skills, excellent written/verbal communication skills

  • Background and working knowledge in research development topics
  • Reasonable knowledge of University policies and procedures is preferred

Work Locations

Flexible First Work Policy:
This position is eligible for the University of Michigan's Flexible First Work Policy. The selected candidate will be able to work with their manager to establish a flexible work location. Most of the GS&A office has chosen to work remotely; the ability to thrive in an independent work environment is crucial.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
