Research Lab Tech II, Pathology, Per Diem 15 Hours

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The focus of the lab is to understand intestinal barrier loss (sometimes referred to as "leaky gut") in Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and other immune-mediated intestinal diseases. Ongoing projects include:
• In vitro analyses of protein interactions that modify the barrier.
• In vivo determination of barrier loss and restoration effects on disease.
• Development and testing of novel therapies.
Under supervision of PI, work independently to:
• Manage experimental mouse colony.
• Provide experimental support to other lab members.
Hours are flexible, but will require roughly 15 hours of work/week.
The lab environment includes members from diverse backgrounds who collaboratively drive discovery and teach one another.
• Training in specific skills can be provided by current lab members.
• A wide range of tools are used, including genetically-modified (knockout/transgenic) mice, patient biopsies, and cutting-edge microscopy approaches.
• Continuing education occurs informally, during lab meetings and journal clubs, and through independent reading.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
With increasing independence as skills are acquired:
• Manage breeding, maintenance, and records of mouse colony.
• Tag, genotype, and transfer mice for breeding, weaning, and experimental use.
• Interact with PI and others to plan and prepare for upcoming experiments.
• Ensure that all necessary supplies, including mice, are available.
Opportunities for greater experimental involvement are available commensurate with skills and interests.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
BS in biological/physical science required.
At least one year of experience in a related research setting (for TRA II).
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to follow existing protocols and both learn and develop new method
• Willingness to or experience in handling laboratory mice.
• Computer literacy, including constructing a logical search of electronic records.
• Ability to identify potential problems and develop solutions.
• Capable of logically and effectively structuring tasks, setting priorities, and developing/executing long-term plans.
