The office welcomes applicants for the Research Safety Specialist, a critical staff member serving the Environmental Safety Programs within the Office of Research Safety and Environmental (ORES).

This position will primarily support 1 program in ORES, with occasional support, as needed, for the Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Safety Programs. This position will work closely with the Environmental Programs Officer.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

This position will work closely with the Environmental Program Officer.

Key duties include, but are not limited to :

• Assists in universal waste storage and mechanical room inspections; pickups for chemical wastes, regulated medical wastes and universal wastes; ensure proper labeling, storage, shipment and disposal of regulated wastes; and inspection of under and above ground storage tanks

• Assists in responding to generators' regulatory inquires, incidents, emergencies, and site cleanups

• Assists with hazardous waste disposal with contractors and ordering supplies from vendors

• Assists in performing EPA RCRA-mandated hazardous waste reduction

• Prepares monthly generator and activity reports; attends meetings, trainings, and conferences

• Assist in implementing universal waste training and compliance programs related to the University's Hazardous Waste Program.

• Assists with annual certification of safety and emergency response equipment.

• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Minimum Hiring Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and one year of related experience; closely related field in Chemistry, Biology, Physics.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Public Health or a related field and one year of related experience. Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
