The Miller Laboratory at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a research scientist with a background in molecular biology or genetics to apply functional genomic analyses to investigate inherited vascular diseases and cardiomyopathies. Available projects include the application of single-nucleus (e.g., snATAC/snRNA-seq, snCUT&Tag) and spatial (spatial transcriptomics, proteomics) genomic analyses of healthy and diseased subjects of ancestrally diverse backgrounds. The laboratory is interested in characterizing the cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms and candidate drug targets for subtypes of cardiovascular diseases with high unmet clinical need.

Required Qualifications:
Requires a doctoral degree or master's degree with significant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

- Optimize scalable single-nucleus and spatial genomic technologies for fresh and archived human biospecimens.
- Apply targeted and systematic genome engineering approaches to perturb candidate regulatory elements or genes in relevant cellular models.
- Work with collaborators to develop and optimize phenotypic screens for genetic and drug perturbations. There will also be opportunities to develop bioinformatics and computational skills through collaborations on multiple internal and external projects.

Required Qualifications:
Requires a doctoral degree or master's degree with significant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in the life sciences (e.g., molecular biology, genetics, or related field)
- Strong working knowledge of biomedical fields, human
- physiology/disease, cell biology and signaling.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work in a cross-functional team.
- Experience in human genetics or functional genomics is preferred.
- Some experience in bioinformatics or computational biology is preferred but not required.
