Job Summary

The Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Research Technician II. The candidate will assist the principal investigator and other laboratory members with in vitro and in vivo assays of hematopoietic system, using mouse models of bone marrow failure and leukemia, as well as primary patient specimens derived from the clinical programs at UTSW. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the ability to independently design well-controlled experiments and may have the opportunity to pursue their own independent line of work, particularly in performing analyses of mouse models of leukemia.

Experience and Education
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required. or
  • Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent. or
  • High school graduation or GED and four (4) years laboratory experience to include two (2) years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
Lab Duties
  • Screens surgeon schedules for candidate patients and coordinates acquisition of tumor samples from the operating room.
  • Maintains a database of cases and tumors. Learns to transplant tumors in mice and maintains tumors by passaging them in mice.
  • Performs drug trials and analyzes tumor response using palpation and MRI.
  • Coordinates tumor tissue analyses. Assists with clinical trials and patient enrollment.
  • Assists with collaborations with other investigators and institutions worldwide.
  • Participates in lab meetings and journal review sessions.
  • Assists with supervising summer students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Duties
  • Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
  • Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
  • Assists in collection of data for project reports.
  • Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
  • May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
