The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Technician or Lab Specialist to assist with the development and application of imaging technologies and strategies for the early diagnosis and management of neurological sequelae associated with surgery. The successful candidate will be testing novel brain and spinal cord monitoring devices and software algorithms in phantoms and large animal models; assisting with placement of invasive monitors and spinal cord and brain device probes in large animal models; analyzing related monitoring data; and assisting the design of a major clinical stroke study. While some relevant experience is desired, training will be provided. We offer a supportive environment and design projects to meet each lab member's career development goals.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelors, but MD or DO degree preferred
  • Training in neuroanatomy, neurology, and stroke neurology
  • Demonstrated interests in pursuing a career in neurology or neurology-related medicine or medical science
  • High proficiency in written and spoken English language
  • Prior publication history
  • Experience working with animals and animal tissue in research
  • Proficiency with computer programming: Python, R, HTML, C++, Shell, Linux

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
