Job Summary:
The Respiratory Care Assistant under the direction of the Registered Respiratory Therapist, provides direct and indirect patient care and performs selected respiratory duties and procedures as assigned while preparing for the role of Registered Respiratory Therapist by being actively enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Care Program.

Education:
Required
Respiratory Therapy student who is enrolled in recognized Respiratory Care Programs that have been approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. The employing facility and the supervising RCP will have appropriate competency evaluations along with licensure from NCRCB for the RCA to perform appropriate scope and level of activities under direct supervision of RCP.

First year Clinical rotations in respiratory program successfully completed

Preferred:
Previous clinical experience in a healthcare setting.

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration
Required:
AHA BLS completed prior to going to department and maintained going forward.

Preferred:
AHA ACLS completed prior to going to department and maintained going forward.

Department Position Summary:
The Respiratory Care Assistant (RCA), under the direction of the Registered Respiratory Therapist, provides direct and indirect patient care and performs selected respiratory duties and procedures as assigned while preparing for the role of Registered Respiratory Therapist.

The Respiratory Care Assistant (RCA) must have an understanding of the principles and practices of Respiratory Therapy, for their level of education/experience. Having computer skills, good time management and communication skills are a must. Proficiency with all equipment utilized in the respiratory care department is expected. Critical Care and general floor care assessment and functional skills are a must.

The Respiratory Care Assistant (RCA) must interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures. This is done through evaluation of direct supervisor by direct observation, in a skills lab, or discussed verbally or written. Competency can also be evaluated by a formal peer review process and/or by self assessment based on objective criteria that is reviewed and validated.
