Job Summary Under general direction of the Winery Manager, the appointee will support the design and implementation of engineering projects related to winery operations and sustainability including, but not limited to, water, carbon, and energy capture systems, Clean in Place including water and chemicals recycling, fermentor improvements and maintenance, and novel winery-related (e.g., fermentation) sensors. Other duties include supervision of student interns; support of instrumentation, equipment, and computer programing and databases; interpretation and implementation of specific and general policies and procedures, particularly those related to winemaking operations, safety, and food safety programs; support research on sustainability related to winemaking; serve as liaison with engineering departments and campus facilities.

The appointee will manage engineering projects related to winery sustainability, instrumentation for winemaking operations, and integration of winery systems (e.g., water, carbon, energy, labor, chemicals, and waste streams) in the Teaching and Research Winery and Jackson Building for Sustainable Winemaking. This support encompasses all work performed in the teaching and research winery, including research, production, and instruction. The appointee will be required to oversee project management, perform system testing, record results of all procedures, manage and present data, and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for wide implementation of project outcomes. The individual will assist with enology courses and train graduate and undergraduate students in proper use of the instrumentation and specific equipment related to sustainability; recognize issues with cellar, wines, instruction, research, or equipment and proactively determine solutions to discuss with the Winery Manager. The appointee will independently maintain and repair winery instrumentation, involving some electrical wiring, plumbing, and carpentry, interfacing with facilities to complete projects.

  • Overtime necessary during grape harvest period.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, or related field, or combination education and experience.
  • Experience in organizing and managing projects related to building operations, instrumentation, and/or sustainability.
  • Experience with programing and maintenance of sensors and other instrumentation, such as PLC and SCADA systems.
  • Experience with electrical and chemical safety.
  • Experience with electrical systems and electrical wiring, and maintaining, overseeing, and repairing instrumentation.
  • Experience training, evaluating, motivating, and resolving problems/conflicts and building effective service-orientated team environment; communication skills to interact and communicate with a diverse group of people and skill to convey instructions to people with various levels of understanding.


Preferred:

Preferred Education/Experience
  • Experience working in a winery or similar production environment.
  • Experience in systems upgrades, instrumentation, including test method development.
  • Experience billing for services and maintaining budgets for projects.
  • Experience ordering supplies and equipment.
