This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, if they meet the below NY HELPS minimum qualifications.

NY HELPS Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

Safety & Health Inspector:
Five years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; or five years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; or five years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.

An associate degree can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor's degree can substitute for four years of experience; a master's degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.

Safety & Health Inspector Trainee:

It is expected that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status in the future, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

55 B/C Qualifications:
This position is designated 55b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Please provide a copy of your 55b/c letter when applying. You must meet the open competitive qualifications from the most recent examination announcement.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a/an Senior Safety and Health Inspector; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Senior Safety and Health Inspector eligible list for this location, if one exists.

70.1 Transfer Qualifications:
One year of permanent or contingent-permanent as a Grade 12 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.

70.4 Transfer Qualifications:
1. One year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service in a position allocated to a Salary Grade 12 or higher. 2. A passing score on the Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee exam and 3. Must meet the minimum qualifications of a Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee. Note: Candidates must not have failed the most recent examination for this title.

Duties Description The incumbent will plan, schedule, and conduct safety and health inspections of selected work sites such as state, county, city, and town offices. Inspections may be conducted at places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations. Such work sites may include asbestos abatement projects. Inspections are made in order to assure conformance with established standards, identifying unsafe conditions and work practices, and to protect employees and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.

Additional Comments This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.

Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.

Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.

Additional location pay is available for the following counties: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.
