Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Safety Services, the Safety Manager is responsible for Cal/OSHA Title 8 and general injury prevention program development and compliance implementation for the UC Irvine campus. The Safety Manager supervises and oversees the work of the Safety and Injury Prevention team, responds to and investigates injuries, incidents, and safety concerns, conducts hazard analyses, and serves as a resource for technical areas of workplace safety in line with state regulation, university policies, and industry best practices. They will use their technical experience and sound professional judgement to identify areas of improvement, propose corrective action, and successfully implement solutions. The Safety Manager will oversee the work of four staff and continually assess program needs, staffing, and workflow to optimize resources. The Safety Manager is responsible for updating and implementing the campus Injury Illness Prevention Plan, assessing program gaps, and serves as a member of the Emergency Support Team and the Emergency Operations Center. The Safety Manager will be the primary liaison to several technical areas and schools on campus and work in a variety of settings including but not limited to offices, machine shops, laboratories, outdoor workspaces, art studios, theater spaces, and fleet servicing yards. They will utilize excellent verbal and written communication skills to engage with employees at varying levels to effectively communicate and implement safety programs in a politically sensitive environment.

Required:
- 5 or more years of experience overseeing occupational safety programs in a diverse work environment 3 or more years' experience supervising staff
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, laws, etc.
- Skills to effectively direct and supervise subordinate staff who are assigned duties in different programs; skills to effectively integrate several highly regulated subject and program areas.
- Solid written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including strong skills to interact successfully with a widely diverse population.
- Solid skills to organize, prioritize and complete projects within budget and time constraints.
- Solid skills to appropriately, efficiently and effectively respond to emergencies and critical situations.
Preferred:
- CSP or CIH preferred
