JOB DESCRIPTION:
Human Resources announces openings for a 1.0 FTE School Security Coordinator positions. This is a 200-days, Grade N-SS position.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES Under the general direction of the Lead School Safety Coordinator (SSC) is responsible for maintaining order and discipline by providing safety and protection for students, staff, equipment, and property. This position ensures compliance with applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations; responds to fire and intrusion alarms in addition to helping staff, students, parents, citizens, and public agencies. SSCs are expected to model and promote a positive, productive, and safe campus climate. This position has no law enforcement authority.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under general supervision of the Lead School Safety Coordinator. The incumbent independently uses their discretion to develop recommendations within the scope of the position's authority, while ensuring to inform and bring particularly complex or sensitive issues or problems forward for resolution.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a single position class in the Department of Safety, Security, Risk and Emergency Management. This position is uniformed and assigned to school's sites to provide safety and protection to students, staff, equipment, and property. This position demonstrates sensitivity to and awareness of the behavior and perceptions of adolescents in communicating and enforcing school district rules and policies. GUIDELINES Guidelines include but are not limited to APS Policies and Procedures. Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), Code of Virginia, School Safety Officer Licensure Manual and Regulations.

CONTACTS

Contacts include, but are not limited to, students, parents, community members, visitors, schoolbased and central office administrators, Arlington County Police Department (ACPD). The purposes of contacts include, but are not limited to, exchange of routine and non-routine information concerning the safety of students and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS

(May not include all duties performed.)

Initiate contact with individuals on school grounds or surrounding property to assure visitor authorization. Manages school access by monitoring gates and other points of entry throughout the school to ensure that students possess permission to leave school grounds, parents, visitors, vendors, and contractors are appropriately identified and escorted. Assists administration in performing searches of students and school property. Deescalates confrontations between students, parents, visitors, and community members while on school property. Escorts students to and from class and the main office as requested by administrators and staff. Assist administrators and law enforcement during emergency drills, investigations, and safety inspections. Maintain a high level of visibility on campus through hallway foot patrols of assigned areas during, before and after school hours. Oversees and coordinates parking and bus regulations on school grounds and reports accidents on school property. Monitor and assist in controlling crowds at special and athletic events; observe and report misuse of facilities, vandalism, or other unauthorized activities. Work collaboratively with school site administration and law enforcement personnel in the coordination of security services. Responds to inquiries from students and parents regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry. Report observances of any evident pertaining to criminal activity to school administration and law enforcement authorities as directed. Assists with developing effective school-community relations and in maintaining a human relations climate which promotes a positive school environment. Participate in required training and professional development as it relates to the responsibilities and functions of the position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: walking, running, lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Generally, the work requires 10% sitting, 70% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS

May be required to testify in court. May be required to operate school vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Observation and supervision of parent pick-up and drop-off traffic areas may be needed at times but at no times will traffic control and/or directing traffic be performed by the School Safety Coordinator.
EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., General Education Development, G.E.D.) required. Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Security Management, Homeland Security, or a related field preferred. Must be 21 years of age or older and successfully pass a finger-print background check. Two (2) years of experience or training in a security related field is required. Experience providing safety/security in an education setting (i.e., K-12, high-education, etc.) is preferred. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

A valid state issued Driver's License. Must possess a School Security Officer (SSO) Certification as defined by the Virginia Code or be able to obtain it within 30 days of assignment/hire.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

This position requires the skills to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including software; preparing and maintaining accurate records. This position requires the knowledge to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include health standards and hazards, safety practices and procedures. This position requires the ability to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances: work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adapting to changing work priorities. communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team. setting priorities; working with frequent and sustained interruptions.
