Position Summary:

The Public Safety Specialist is responsible for the coordination, scheduling, and general oversight of non-sworn security personnel. The specialist coordinates training and maintains training records for security officers The Specialist must have a working knowledge of security functions and processes. Security Specialist are also responsible for conducting interviews of security candidates. The specialists will be solution oriented and possess the ability to work well with various departments within The Detroit Public Schools Community District. If conflicts arise between security and school administrators, the specialists will act as a liaison in the resolution process.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • 5 years security experience
  • Ability to use Outlook, Microsoft Office, excel, and Smart Sheets
  • Flexible schedule, ability to work overtime as needed

Essential Functions:
  • Oversight of security personnel: This may include, but not be limited to the following:
  • Receiving sick calls and relaying this information to school building administrators, as well as attendance tracking.
  • Regular inspection of security officer's uniforms and performance.
  • Collaboration with building leaders for disciplinary matters involving security officers. Assisting with creating and implementing performance improvement plans for security officers who fail to meet minimum security standards
  • Conducting interviews of security officer candidates.
  • Scheduling security officer coverage for DPSCD events, such as athletic events, school board meetings, and general community use requests for security officer coverage.
  • Scheduling and coordinating security officer coverage for summer school. This includes creating and maintaining a standby list of officers to fill in due to call-offs and other absences. Assisting with payroll functions to ensure security officers are paid in a timely manner.
  • Coordinating and tracking training and certification of security officers
  • Developing and implementing employee recognition programs

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
