Senior Business Manager

The Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, (UTK) invites applications for our Senior Business Manager position. We are seeking candidates who can contribute in meaningful ways to the mission and goals of the Department and University.

The Department

The Department of Theory and Practice in Education includes 75+ full-time faculty (37 tenure track), 20 academic programs housed in 3 distinct units, and 8 research and outreach centers reporting to the department. The department provides undergraduate majors in education and audiology and speech pathology, deaf studies, and special education with multiple minors offered. The graduate programs offered are a Master of Science with five concentrations and several specializations, an EdS, or Specialist in Education, and a PhD with three concentrations and several specializations. The mission of TPTE is to benefit local, regional, national, and global communities by conducting research, preparing teachers, and engaging in outreach.

The Position

The purpose of this position is to provide the department head with comprehensive administrative management and oversight of the fiscal, human resources, academic, operational, and data management responsibilities of the Department of Theory & Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE) and all centers reporting to the department. Position supervises the assistant business manager and carries dotted line reporting for business managers in centers that report to TPTE. As delegated by the department head, this position carries full signature authority for specific fiscal and human resource related matters of the department. The breadth of responsibilities is such that decisions made by this position can have far-reaching and long-term impact on the continued success of the department by affecting its ability to strategically plan, to meet fiscal objectives, to maintain fiscal and administrative integrity, to promote a meaningful working relationship with both internal and external constituencies, supporting and assisting faculty with regard to the financial matters of sponsored research, start-up funds, etc., acquire and report information and data associated with academic and research programs, and to comply with relevant federal and state regulations and statutes, and university policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or related field, with 5 years' experience in accounting or business management experience, and one year of supervisory experience. Knowledge and mastery of standard accounting principles (GAAP). Professional integrity, including a thorough understanding of confidentiality. Communication and interpersonal skills sufficient for effective interactions with a broad range of individuals, including faculty. Effective organizational, prioritization, and problem-solving skills. Effective time management, stress management, and conflict management skills. Proficiency with common office and database software. Ability to compile and analyze financial data and interpret data to make projections. Ability to lead a team.

Preferred qualifications: Master's degree in business, accounting, or related field. Financial work history at a comprehensive research university. Work history related to post-award management of grants and contracts. Knowledge of IRIS (SAP) or other ERP system, Banner, ADMIT, Argos, Cayuse SP, Taleo. Knowledge of UT's fiscal and human resources policies and procedures. Knowledge of Uniform Guidance. Knowledge of Graduate School policies and procedures.
