Position Summary

 

The S enior Controls Engineer will be responsible for the design, maintenance, support, and long-term innovation of ADUSA's robotics and automation systems across the entire ADUSA network. As a member of the Automation Support & Controls team, this individual will be part of a self-sustaining world class support structure that is capable of providing detailed design and controls requirements for new and existing equipment within the facilities, adapt and modify the system to business changes, and drive best-in-class facility up-time through the coordination of detailed maintenance programs and innovative design solutions to improve upon the mechanical and controls components of implemented automation and robotic systems network wide. In addition, this individual will be responsible for creating the spare parts inventory requirements and be a leader in vendor support contract negotiations within the DC's as well as collaborate with peer leadership groups (e.g. D&T Services, Operations, Finance) within the organization as part of a cohesive strategy supporting the overall company goals and achieving stakeholder buy-in.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

 
  • Act as subject matter expert and as the technical controls project lead for all newly developed scopes of work, projects in motion, and modifications to existing systems using best practices for automated systems.
  • Design PLC controls / power panels using AutoCAD for panel layouts, field device layouts, electrical wiring schematics and make panel component selections using supplier recommended specifications.
  • Create, develop, and document PLC programs for industrial environment using Ladder Logic.
  • Develop flow diagrams for program design, production programming, simulation, testing, start-up, and debugging of systems.
  • Create BOM's for all panels within the facilities and ensure that spare parts are on-hand.
  • Leverage deep industry knowledge and understanding of best practices to standardize components across the network, create a blueprint for all DC's within the network, and implement pricing agreements on parts / components with preferred vendors.
  • Develop end-of-life replacement strategies for all panels and that action plans are executed upon.
  • Design, implement, and train junior engineers on root cause corrective action programs related to equipment breakdowns and execute Continuous Improvement practices.
  • Provide 24/7 troubleshooting and support on all controls, mechanical, and systemic issues related to all mechanization, automation, and robotics across the entire supply chain.
  • Ensure vendor compliance to all support contracts and partner with internal maintenance teams to ensure all PM (preventative maintenance) programs are executed.
  • Design and maintain as-builts for all PLC Control and Power Panels in the field.
  • Design (from scratch) Human Machine Interface (HMI) Graphic Screens for industrial projects as well as assist and train junior engineers in the process to modify existing.
  • Support all facilities within the supply chain network including, but not limited to, internal and third-party run locations.
  • Develop and implement standard engineering practices, as well as provide detailed documentation upon project completion.
  • Develop Scope of Work (SOW) cost estimates both internally and externally.
  • Provide direct assistance to employees and contractors to train/troubleshoot electrical/programming issues remotely, as well as in the field, and give recommendations for safety, repair, and upgrade to repetitive issues.
  • Partner with external vendors in the design, support, and maintenance of all equipment within the facilities.
  • Ensure compliance to vendor contracts and provide any required internal support in doing so.
  • Design optimized PLC programming for optimized production, energy savings, and equipment reliability.
  • Perform research into new technologies within the industry to determine feasibility and impact to the business.
 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 
  • Highly proficient in AutoCAD (AutoCAD Electrical preferred), Excel, Power Point, and other MS Office Products
  • Proficient in commissioning conveyor parcel scanner systems using Sick, Cognex, Keyence, and Datalogic systems.
  • Experience interfacing with Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) for integration to the control systems and in house IT supported Warehouse Management Systems (WMS)
  • Experience using SCADA/HMI software (e.g: FactoryTalk View SE, Wonderware, or Ignition)
  • Experience with at least 2 industry leading PLC platforms and HMI software required.
  • Knowledge of ARC Flash safety requirements, NFPA 7OE, NEC, and OSHA standards
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems protocol (TCP/IP, Ethernet IP, Devicenet, Control-Net, Profibus, etc.) and controls networking principles and/or training
  • Proficient in the development and interpretation of vendor support contracts to ensure that all scopes of work are completed.
  • Hands on experience with the following types of systems; high volume sortation, conveyor, pick-to-light, ASRS, and robotics in a distribution environment.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, PLC, WMS/WCS/WES systems and material handling maintenance.
  • Proven ability to create, develop, and document PLC programs for industrial environment using Ladder Logic. 
  • Ability to author, interpret, and utilize electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to use OEM supplied drawing for complex equipment to integrate both controls and safety with existing or new equipment as needed.
  • Strong background in working with Electrical and Instrumentation Controls (EIC) in medium to heavy manufacturing or warehouse distribution environment preferred.
  • Strong time management and project management skills to organize and plan effectively in developing high quality systems, budgets, and processes.
  • Proven electrical troubleshooting skills both remotely and on- site. Must have strong ability to diagnose symptoms to component level and determine root cause with or without input.
  • Knowledge of vendor contracts inclusive of the ability to read and interpret contract language as well as hold vendors accountable for specific deliverables within their scope.
  • Assist in the negotiation and development of deliverables within vendor contracts (for both services and support)
  • Proven results-oriented and "hands-on" approach.

  • Work needed schedule to perform assigned duties.
  • Requires travel - typically 20 - 25%
Education

 
  • Bachelor's degree (EE, EET, or Mechatronics) or equivalent from an accredited college, technical school; or minimum 5-years' experience as a Controls Engineer at the system architect level in a related industry will be considered in lieu of a degree
     
Experience

 
  • 5+ years of experience in Controls Engineering role at the system architect level
  • In lieu of direct experience in Controls Engineering role, demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of medium-to-large scale systems incorporating multiple types of automation will be reviewed.
