The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost at the University of Virginia seek applications for a Senior Director - Learning Experience and Digital Innovation to join the Office of the Vice Provost for Online Education and Digital Innovation (VP-OEDI). Reporting to the Managing Director Online Education and Digital Innovation, the Senior Director- Learning Experience and Digital Innovation will lead a creative, cross-functional team supporting the design and development of learning products and solutions for the Office of the Vice Provost-Online Education and Digital Innovation (VP-OEDI). This individual will work directly with leadership and faculty partners across Grounds to develop a shared vision and strategy around how VP-OEDI can best support innovation in online education and produce a full spectrum of online learning experiences (including degree programs, credit and non-credit courses, and other learning experiences) in partnership with schools, institutes, and other units.

Serving as a functional leader overseeing a team of in-house personnel, service provider(s), and vendors responsible for the imagining, creation, and ongoing quality assurance of UVA's portfolio of online and hybrid offerings, the Senior Director-Learning Design and Innovation is responsible for ensuring the team is aligned to the strategic vision of the VP-OEDI. The Senior Director will build and maintain internal culture, practices, and processes to ensure an efficient, productive, and creative team. In addition, the Senior Director will work closely with vendors and partners across Grounds to develop consistent training, onboarding, and development opportunities to continuously improve product quality and efficiencies.

Major Responsibilities :

New Product Development and Program Design

In collaboration with members of the VP-OEDI team, academic deans, program directors/academic chairs, faculty, and subject matter experts, lead the overall design and development of new and reimagined programs. Oversee the continuous assessment of quality to ensure the creation of scalable, sustainable, and engaging online and hybrid offerings.
  • Oversee the process of ideation and conceptualization, prototyping, design, development, and continuous improvement of all programs supported by the office of VP-OEDI.
  • Create, implement, and continuously improve the design and development process for a diverse product portfolio to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Ensure quality by standing up a consistently applied, rigorous instrument of quality assurance that utilizes internal and external data sources.
  • Implement a process for revising and updating existing products within the portfolio.
  • Establish and maintain a clear product development playbook to ensure consistency of product as well as a consistent implementation of UVA brand guidelines.
  • Create a curriculum framework to ensure consistency and appropriate leveling of course content across schools and products.
  • Establish a framework and a set of tools and platforms to support stackable/modular program design and content reuse.
  • Work in close collaboration with enrollment management, marketing, program delivery, and student success to ensure the smooth running of operations within the division and to monitor/track success and quality of experience for current products.
  • Collaborate with UVA schools and divisions to incorporate work-based learning opportunities into online/hybrid programs and products.
  • Assist UVA Schools in the identification of Subject Matter Experts, if needed, to assist in the design and development of educational products.
  • Manage program development budgets to ensure cost-effective use of university resources.
Strategic and Innovative Leadership

Partner with UVA schools and members of the VP-OEDI team to drive accountability and success through the establishment of clear goals and KPIs for new and reimagined online, digital, and hybrid offerings. In addition, identify the consistent pillars that comprise all UVA online and hybrid offerings while also determining the customized needs for each individual school. Work collaboratively to establish a clear UVA brand for online and help champion that brand across the University's online/digital offerings. Lead and support strategic planning efforts to ensure offerings align with and progress towards established organizational goals. Provide strategic guidance and support to UVA Schools, program directors, business partners to identify needs and type of development/product.

Vendor and Staff Management

Oversee the management of in-house resources and partner relationships to create dynamic, learner-centric experiences that foster growth, cultivate talent, and drive sustainable success across diverse educational settings.
  • Recruit, on-board, and manage a team of internal and external learning experience designers and multimedia specialists for the design and development of products and programs.
  • On-board and incorporate technology and tools to aid in the efficiency and improvement of UVA educational products.
  • Provide strategic guidance and support to internal staff and vendors to ensure the creation of engaging and impactful learning solutions.
  • Implement a project management software to track development of online and hybrid offerings to ensure products are delivered on time and on budget.
In collaboration with leadership, this individual will be responsible for and/or demonstrate the following skills or experiences:
  • Build strategic roadmaps for curriculum development, program implementation, and program operations that improve the quality, reach, impact, consistency, and scalability of university online and hybrid learning experiences
  • Oversee the implementation of the strategic roadmap, utilizing data to track effectiveness, inform decisions, increase operational efficiency, and enhance educational outcomes
  • Develop a strategy for driving efficiency in program development across internal and external staff resources and support the sourcing, vetting, contracting, and oversight of external vendors supporting key team functions.
  • Partner with the Managing Director and school leadership to identify, evaluate, scope, and sequence new program development opportunities through a consistent intake process.
  • Provide strong project management skills to ensure appropriate resource allocation and timely completion of high-quality learning products.
  • Develop a consistent and scalable QA process to ensure the quality of all products consistent with UVA's brand and build capacity across internal partners to support ongoing QA and product revision cycles.
  • Provide leadership and direction around instructional design approaches, evidenced-based design and experiential learning approaches for online (design, development skills, knowledge and application of evidence-based approaches, research and trends).
  • Engage and foster relationships with faculty and campus community. Troubleshoot issues as they arise at any point in the product development process.
  • Proactively implement updates and changes to the design process based upon feedback and data as well as best practices in the field of learning design to ensure the continued support of the mission and goals of the University.
  • This individual will collaborate with a fast-moving senior leadership team to ideate on strategy and requires a high level of presence among the design and development teams to quickly identify and address potential issues or delays.
  • Develop appropriate professional development opportunities and process enhancements for team and individual growth.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills, enthusiasm, positive attitude, ability to communicate with peers and colleagues around difficult and challenging discussions in an objective and proactive manner.
  • Foster and grow a team of creative individuals in coordination with the Managing Director and VP-OEDI.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education, Instructional Design and/or a body of work that demonstrates similar competencies is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years' overall experience with a significant track record demonstrating increasing responsibility in learning design and innovation and an understanding of learning sciences principles and technology trends is required.
  • Experience developing a broad range of online and hybrid learning formats for traditional, enterprise, and lifelong learners with demonstrated experience designing and/or leading adult learning.
  • Track record of leadership in B2C, B2B learning design projects.
  • Strong background in design thinking and collaborative leadership models that support innovation.
  • Experience working in innovative learning environments. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to manage change and shift gears comfortably; highly effective in ambiguous environments and able to produce maximum results with little direction and guidance.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and competing priorities while balancing quality with on-time delivery.
  • Experience managing, coaching, and developing junior designers
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience as an innovative thinker/problem-solver, a collaborator, and entrepreneur.
  • Ability to work strategically with many constituencies, peers, faculty, students, campus administrators and leadership etc.
  • Ability to develop long-range goals and objectives while simultaneously managing execution and details across multiple projects and tasks.
  • Demonstrated record of creative, inspiring, and accomplished leadership in innovative online learning environments; someone who possesses the highest level of commitment to advancing the University's priorities.
This is a hybrid position that will require the ability to attend regular in person meetings in Charlottesville, VA.
