Under the general direction of the Chief, Hazardous Waste, Air, Noise & Paleontology Office, the Senior Engineering Geologist (Specialist) is responsible for developing policies and guidance related to effective management of hazardous waste and paleontological resources during transportation project delivery and at Caltrans owned facilities. Typical activities include developing policies and tools related to management of chemical pollutants, contaminated right of way, superfund sites, underground storage tanks (USTs), aerially deposited lead (ADL), naturally occurring asbestos (NOA), treated wood waste, and landfill disposal. In addition, the incumbent functions in a multi-disciplinary role and provides expert technical advice and recommendations to Caltrans staff statewide regarding the engineering geology and hydrogeological aspects of subsurface, groundwater and hazardous waste/contamination issues encountered during project delivery. Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a geologist or geophysicist issued by the State of California is required.

Working Conditions

Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County.

The work environment will include office and occasionally, field environments. The work environment is fast-paced and requires considerable flexibility in managing time, priorities and assignments. It can be demanding and/or stressful. The incumbent may be required to travel to meeting facilities, and/or to projects sites. In the field the incumbent may experience all climatic conditions, including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, or other conditions such as, dust, dirt, construction equipment, traffic, animals, insects, and loud noises. While at their base of operation, the employee will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. The incumbent may include occasional work involving investigation and/or cleanup of hazardous waste sites where the presence of hazardous substances may be known or not yet ascertained. These sites may contain chemical, physical or biologic hazards posing a possible threat to personal health and safety. Appropriate attire and conduct on these sites is required. As required by the Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, 29 CFR 1910.120, at a minimum, training in the identification, avoidance and response to site hazards as provided by the 24-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is mandatory prior to site visits, followed by 8-hours of on-the-job, supervised field training/experience. The HAZWOPER certification shall be maintained by completion of the 8-hour annual refresher course.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • Describe your experience providing monitoring support during construction of highway projects to assess the presence of paleontological resources.
  • Describe your knowledge and experience developing environmental documents and any specific studies and reports necessary to address hazardous waste conditions, including the management of paleontological resources.
  • Describe your experience developing and providing training to staff in the areas of hazardous waste management and paleontology.
  • Effective communication and the ability to build successful working relationships are essential skills for the Senior Geologist position. Describe your communication skills and your experience and abilities in developing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external partners.
