About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Senior Network Technician maintains, troubleshoots and analyzes network related issues on the SMU data network. This position will work in a small team environment within Central IT, but will have significant interaction with other University Departments to address their needs and issues. This position will be expected to manage multiple priorities will providing excellent customer service.

Essential Functions:
  • Daily monitoring and completing campus network related tickets involving moves, adds, and changes related to computer networking which may include troubleshooting, replacing or installing new network components which are technical in nature.
  • Assisting with design and implementation of computer networking for new construction, renovation, and ad-hoc projects. Including estimating, documenting, and installing network related components. Working on project teams for specific areas of responsibility.
  • Identifying, developing, and taking ownership of short and long-term plans for in-field areas of improvement. This individual will collaborate with internal SMU teams toward completion of these plans in a constructive and efficient manner.
  • Provide oversight and administration for overall data network closet equipment, presentation, and improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Education and Experience:

A High School Diploma, or equivalent, is required for the role. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.

A minimum of three (3) years of experience is required.

Previous experience troubleshooting TCP/IP protocols, VLAN configurations, and network technologies such as DNS/DHCP is required. Previous experience working within a large complex organization is desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Preferred certifications: CCENT/CCNA, BICSI, Network
