Research in the Data Systems Group at Microsoft Research focuses on several aspects of large-scale cloud data platforms and services, and novel ways to accelerate discovering insight from data. We are interested in a variety of topics including resource management, storage and indexing, caching, query optimization and query execution, security, self-service data cleaning and transformation at scale, data quality, and search and discovery of structured data.

Our past research has been incorporated into Microsoft's platforms such as SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure Stream Analytics, Orleans, Power BI, Dynamics, and Bing. Many of our systems artifacts have been open-sourced and have had impact across industry and academia. Our research has also had significant impact on the academic community with influential publications at top conferences such as ACM SIGMOD, VLDB, and IEEE ICDE including multiple best paper awards and test-of-time awards.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on problems in the areas of data platforms and analytics.
  • Publish papers at top academic conferences.
  • Leverage opportunities to impact the data platform industry, including Microsoft's products and services.


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in Computer Science, or similar field
  • A research program demonstrated by publications at top-tier conferences.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Background in relational databases, big data systems, and data analytic techniques
  • Expertise in database storage engines, query processing and query optimization, distributed systems
  • Understanding of modern hardware and their architectural impact on data platforms
Research Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
