Senior SDS Systems & Safety Engineer

Role Summary:

The Systems and Safety team is responsible for the development of requirements and safety aspects necessary to autonomous driving fleet on US public roads. Within this team, the Systems & Safety Engineer will be responsible to gather a clear understanding of the differences between European and US operations including the ODD (Operational Design Domain), driving regulations, and other related documents. This information will be analyzed to specify driving behavior requirements, functional scenarios, and triggering conditions in support of and support the verification strategy and safe deployment of the Self-Driving System on public roads. This individual will collaborate with the global team to ensure that the safety acceptance criteria are sufficient for public road operations and lead the development of safety plans and reports as needed for US deployments.

Role Responsibilities:

• Identify relevant laws, regulations, traffic control devices and related criteria to be fulfilled for safe autonomous driving in the US

• Derive driving behavior functional requirements and parameters for US operations

• Create functional scenarios associated with behavior requirements applicable to US operations

• Collaborate with global V&V and test teams on establishing pass/fail and roadmanship criteria across various environments (HIL proving grounds, fleet, etc.) for the verification of driving behavior requirements

• Establish triggering conditions for SOTIF scenarios and safety acceptance criteria for US deployment

• Evaluate sufficiency of the product Safety Assurance Case for US release and close gaps as needed

• Develop safety plans and reports targeted for external stakeholders, including business partners, government agencies and regulators (federal, state & local).

• Collaborate with the global safety team to support the development of processes, tools and databases to efficiently manage the above activities.

Years of Relevant Experience:

• 7+ years of experience in a quality focused role in the development of complex, software-controlled systems

Education - Required:

• Bachelor's Degree REQUIRED (Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field); Master's degree preferred. Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

Skills:

• Technical leadership across a diverse team

• Excellent communication skills with ability to span a large and global diverse team

• Proven self-starter mindset and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision

• Be able to handle rapidly changing priorities

• Proven track record of delivering high priority assignments efficiently

• Strong desire to learn new skills related to technology and software

Specialized Skills - Required:

• Strong record working in the field of system safety as it relates to hardware, software, and system-level design

• Expertise with the application of ISO 21448 and/or safety critical system design best practices for analysis of functional performance limitations or insufficiencies

• Strong understanding of evaluation of autonomous systems including pass/fail criteria, metrics, requirements, and more.

• Expertise regarding use case analysis and/or scenario analysis

• Strong foundation in systems engineering fundamentals

Specialized Skills - Desired:

• Experience in developing and/or testing autonomous systems

• Automotive engineering experience

• Expertise with modern systems engineering requirements management practices

Work Flexibility:

• Accommodation for working time zone differences between US locations and Germany as needed

• Ready and able to travel (international and domestic) to remote offices, training facilities or other testing cities subject to business needs
