Job Description

Under direction, is in responsible charge of the operation, maintenance and repair of all utilities in large public buildings and of a steam power plant, refuse incinerator plant, swimming pool, and/or skating rink; performs related work.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:
1. Takes responsible charge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment such as boilers, furnaces, refuse incinerators, pumps, fans, engines, turbines, generators, electrical and heating and ventilating equipment, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, etc.
2. May operate or supervise the operation of control consoles in control rooms.
3. Is in responsible charge of the operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment in swimming pools and skating rinks.
4. Supervises assigned personnel.
5. Prepares work schedules and directs the assignment of personnel.
6. Prepares equipment and material requisitions required for operation, maintenance and repair; directs and evaluates studies of operating procedures.
7. Determines and directs work procedures.
8. Keeps records and makes reports.
9. As directed, inspects low pressure boilers in accordance with a unified inspection procedure instituted by the New York City Department of Buildings.

Minimum Qualifications
1. One year of full-time experience as a Stationary Engineer in charge of a high pressure plant supervising a subordinate staff in the operation, maintenance and adjustment of high pressure boilers; and
2. A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings; and
3. A Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01) issued by the New York City Fire Department.

However, for appointment in certain New York City agencies, candidates may also be required to possess a valid Certificate of Equivalent Instruction issued by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and/or a valid Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (Unlimited Capacity) issued by the New York City Fire Department. In addition to the aforementioned license and certificates, candidates may also be required, within 90 days of appointment, to obtain a valid Standpipe Certificate and Automatic Sprinkler Certificate issued by the New York City Fire Department.

All required certificates must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
