Minimum Qualifications
Signs and Markings Technician I:
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience in a construction or traffic control role.



Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.
  • Valid Texas Driver License.

Signs and Markings Technician II:
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience in a construction or traffic control role.
  • Education may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.
  • Valid Texas Driver License.
Notes to Applicants
The Signs and Markings Technician I will perform skilled tasks in the installation and maintenance of Traffic Signs, Roadway Markings and/or Banners. This position will work within a controlled work area or temporary traffic closure and along active lanes of traffic. This position will work in all

types of weather conditions and may have to respond to emergencies during weather or emergency events as well as potentially perform call-back assignments on a 24-hour rotation.

Driving Requirement:

This position requires a Valid Texas Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. In addition, must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
  • Proven ability to perform technically detailed tasks in Traffic Sign and Roadway Markings operations with efficient skills in quality control and assurance techniques.
  • Experience using Traffic Signs installation and maintenance equipment (such as Design It, Flexi or equivalent cutter plotter software and roller equipment).
  • Experience using Roadway Markings installation and maintenance equipment (such as surface grinders, push carts, hot applied materials, airless spray rigs, long-line striping trucks).
  • Experience operating aerial tower truck (bucket truck) in traffic while performing banner and overhead sign installation as well as tree or vegetation mitigation practices.
  • Experience operating computer devices to complete daily work assignments, track progress, upload files and maintain logs in electronic asset management system.
