Purpose

Oversee operations of The University of Texas at Austin Solid Waste & Recycling program. The oversite includes planning, organizing, scheduling, directing staff, and managing the collection and disposal program for all solid waste, recycling, and compost products. Inventory and purchasing management are included. Possessing and maintaining a valid Texas Class B CDL license is required for this position.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise 8 full-time Solid Waste & Recycling staff including the planning and managing of daily waste management activities. Train, counsel, discipline, and conduct performance evaluations to maintain a high standard of service delivery and to provide team building. Ensure compliance with applicable policies and standards.
  • Load and unload solid waste, recycling, and compost from various locations and transport to waste management facility using University-owned compactor trucks. Will be responsible for driving routes as needed.
  • Provide clear, consistent communication to the Building Logistics & Keys (BLK) Assistant Director and Solid Waste & Recycling (SWR) staff to ensure projects are accomplished according to established guidelines. Ensure the BLK Assistant Director and SWR staff are kept apprised of day-to-day operations and issues, including waste management data reporting.
  • Carefully maintain, account for, and protect all SWR assets, and notify the BLK Assistant Director in the event of damage or loss. Maintain assigned vehicles and associated equipment ensuring they are fully functional, safe, clean, and ready for use at all times.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior at all times with leadership, co-workers, and clients to represent Facilities Services' organizational goals by abiding by the work unit expectations as described by the Facilities Services Employee Handbook and The University of Texas at Austin Handbook of Operating Procedures.
  • Assist in monitoring shop budgets and ensure unit operations are within budget and all financial transactions are authorized and properly documented.
  • Drive various University-owned vehicles, including pickup trucks, box trucks, and utility carts in the performance of job duties. A valid Texas Class B CDL is required. Other related duties as assigned.
  • This job requires a valid Texas Class B CDL. The selected candidate must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED. A valid Texas Class B CDL. 3 years of experience as a CDL driver. 3 years of supervisory experience. 5 years with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel at a high level of proficiency. Direct customer service experience.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree. More than 7 years of experience working in a solid waste and recycling environment, including 5 years of supervisory experience. More than 2 years of experience with current methods and systems of dispatch, scheduling, inventory, recordkeeping, and purchasing. More than 2 years of direct customer service experience, including service pick-up/delivery scheduling and complaint resolution. 3 years of intermediate experience with Microsoft Word and Excel skills.

Driving Required

This job requires a Texas Class B CDL license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. Work Shift
  • Monday - Friday 4:30 am - 1:00 pm. Overtime will occasionally be required, in addition to working on weekends for football games, special events, etc.
