Position Summary:

An English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction to English Language Learners (ELLs) to help them acquire proficiency in English and succeed academically. They play a important role in supporting the linguistic, academic, and cultural development of students who are learning English as a second language. This position involves planning and delivering differentiated lessons tailored to the needs of ELLs, assessing language proficiency and academic progress, and fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive classroom environment.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree
  • Professional certificate in the area of responsibility issued by the Alabama State Department of Education prior to starting date
  • Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach the Alabama Course of Study (ACOS) to ESL students with fidelity
  • Review home language surveys to determine program eligibility and appropriate services
  • Regularly assess English language proficiency using standardized and informal assessments
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons that address the linguistic needs of ESL students and facilitate active language acquisition
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure appropriate support and accommodations for ESL students
  • Plan and deliver professional development for faculty and staff to ensure
  • Develop lesson plans, assessments, and instructional materials in accordance with established guidelines
  • Instruct and monitor students in using learning materials and equipment, integrating relevant technology to support instruction
  • Manage classroom behavior by enforcing rules and maintaining discipline in accordance with school policies
  • Provide timely feedback to promote English language development and adjust teaching strategies based on individual progress
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, updating all required documentation as per school regulations
  • Prepare reports on student performance and communicate results to stakeholders
  • Participate in required parent, school, district, and state meetings and/or conferences
  • Engage in professional development to stay current with ESL best practices
  • Set and communicate clear learning objectives while creating an effective learning environment
  • Observe and evaluate student performance, grading classwork, homework, tests, and assignments
  • Other duties as assigned by the school and/or district administrators

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee must also talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use their hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
