Responsibilities
The Specialty Medical Assistant Lead represents the clinic with professionalism and excellent customer service skills. The Specialty Medical Assistant Lead may also perform a variety of other duties including serving as a Navigator to an assigned Provider throughout the course of the patient's journey in a high acuity environment. This is essential due to the high-risk nature of the specialty, including supporting patients that are undergoing life-saving interventions and the Providers caring for these unique patients. It is the role of the Specialty Medical Assistant Lead to maximize the clinical experience, before and after the patient visit. Orients patients to the clinic routine and prepares patients for examination and treatment. Responsible for a variety of clinical functions within the clinical setting requiring advanced knowledge and integration of standard of care, resources and data.
Qualifications
Will perform typical Specialty Medical Assistant duties such as preparing exam rooms, taking vital signs, maintaining proper inventory levels, accurately entering data in patient records and charts, accurately recording data in medicine logs, etc. 1.2 Serve as clinic Navigator to an assigned Provider throughout the course of the Patient's care in a high acuity environment. 1.3 Perform specialty related functions in the clinic requiring knowledge and integration of standards of care, data management and independent judgment. Examples include but are not limited to: a) assistance with bone marrow biopsies, b) arranging for genetic testing and management of results, c) assistance with high level procedures (deep joint injections, ultrasounds, bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures and biopsies). 1.4 Super user and able to efficiently and effectively navigate clinic's assigned medical record system. 1.5 Identify normal and abnormal symptomatology through high acuity environment experience. Report specific urgent symptoms to Provider STAT. Close communication loop on all urgent symptoms and critical lab results. 1.6 Interface with the multidisciplinary clinical teams on a daily basis for example: pharmacy, chemotherapy, infusion nursing, hospital teams including OR and Imaging. To ensure successful scheduling of complication patient needs: (blood transfusions, hydration, ER admission, Hospital Admission, STAT Imaging/lab, Home/Health Hospice). 1.7 Document treatment being provided to patient in the clinic as well as what occurs outside. 1.8 Working knowledge of insurance authorization and verification process for insurance plans and federal and state programs. Coordination of complicated medications requiring prior authorization. This includes oral oncolytics, requiring specialty pharmacy enrollment or REMs program enrollment. This requires the gathering of specific clinical information including genetic and molecular profiling results. Tracking of oral oncolytic prescriptions from Provider to delivery of medication to the patient and scheduling all related patient education and follow up appointments. 1.9 Analyze information, problems, situations, practices and procedures to recognize alternatives and provide solutions. 1.10 Work with Tertiary Care Centers, helping patients navigate systems including Pre-BMT work up and Post BMT care. 1.11 Interface with pharmacies (ex, scheduling chemotherapy). 1.12 Apply baseline knowledge of histopathology to incoming lab results for review by Provider.
