The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer - Controls Ground Support Equipment is the technical expert in design, analysis, and operation of launch site ground support equipment (GSE). This role interfaces directly with launch site engineers and management to understand GSE controls needs for new and existing processing facilities. Additionally, the Sr. Manufacturing Engineer - Controls Ground Support Equipment will develop cost estimations, lead procurement, manage vendors, run design reviews, establish acceptance criteria and commission hardware. This position is responsible for managing all phases for new and existing ground support equipment in support of Kuiper launch operations.

The ideal candidate is comfortable in a highly technical setting and leads collaboration with other departments to reach the best solution to any problem. The candidate will have extensive experience with mechanical and electrical system development for space hardware integration and test, with particular focus on satellite processing.

Key job responsibilities

• \tImplement, and support control systems for various industrial automation processes, including PLC programming, HMI development, motion control, and system integration to support launch operation equipment.

• \tCollaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and operations personnel, to design and integrate control systems for industrial automation systems.

• \tInterpret intricate electrical schematics to effectively understand and identify issues within the control system.

• \tParticipate in comprehensive safety risk assessments and ensure strict compliance with SIL safety standards and regulations for control systems.

• \tParticipate in Preliminary Acceptance Test, Factory Acceptance Test and Site Acceptance Test for controls equipment buy-off.

• \tTake ownership of control system hardware arrival, install and setup on site in FL.

• \tProvide expert technical support, training, and guidance to operations and maintenance teams to ensure optimal performance and uptime of control systems.

• \tPossess exceptional troubleshooting skills and the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve control system issues, minimizing downtime and production disruptions.

• \tDevelop and maintain detailed documentation, including control system requirements and specifications, bill of materials, programming code, and user manuals.

• \tDrive continuous improvement and optimization of control systems to enhance efficiency, safety, and overall system performance.

• \tConduct regular system inspections, maintenance, and upgrades to ensure optimal performance of controls equipment.

• \tStay at the forefront of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in the field of control systems and functional safety.

• \tFamiliarity with virtualization and cloud-based control systems.

• \tShift schedule will vary, depending on production/launch schedules

• \tMust be willing and able to perform extended travel up to 25% annually, either domestically or internationally as business needs demand.

A day in the life

The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer will spend significant amounts of time collaborating with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to determine GSE needs. They will be responsible for designing and procuring new hardware to support operations while maintain existing GSE. They will lead GSE efforts at the launch site and address root cause of failures and issues, implement corrective actions and hardware modifications.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.

- 8+ years of experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining advanced control systems for industrial automation applications.

- Able to obtain and maintain a US Passport and Must meet customs entry requirements to include but not limited to: Yellow Fever vaccine and other immunization requirements as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

- Able to pass Kennedy Space Center background checks

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- In-depth knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, motion control systems, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).

- Extensive experience with control system software and tools used in industrial automation (e.g., Rockwell Automation, TIA Portal, WinCC, Safety Integrated, Allen-Bradley, or equivalent).

- Comprehensive understanding of safety standards and regulations related to industrial control systems.

- Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

- Ability to work independently, manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

- Experience in mentoring junior control systems engineers
