Sr. Power System Controls Engineer

The System Controls and Modeling team is responsible for dynamics modeling, algorithm design, and system controls implementation for energy products. Tesla is seeking a Sr. Power System Controls Engineer to join the team in developing high-performance power controls for the Tesla energy ecosystem including the Site Controller, Microgrid Controller, Megapack and Powerwall, and Supercharger. The engineer is expected to perform controls design through all stages starting with concept stage, modeling, implementation, and validation.


Responsibilities

• Create models to represent the Tesla Energy system in dynamic modeling software, and real time simulations tools
• Continue to increase our in-house capability to model Tesla's product in HIL testing environment to test the product power system's dynamics behavior when connected to the large and small grids
• Perform modelling and HIL testing to test that the product behavior meets the product's design specification
• Improve and build HIL test setups and automate them to perform regression tests

Requirements

• Expert knowledge of at least two power system modelling and HIL tools: Simulink, Typhoon, OPAL-RT, PSCAD
• Strong knowledge of at least one programming language: Rust, Python, C, C++
• Direct experience modelling large and small grids with deep understanding of grid level performance requirements
• Strong working knowledge of control theory, ability to implement PID control
• Setting up full HIL testing systems including physical and software setups of meters, controllers, network switches, power supplies, oscilloscopes, and interface cards
• Communicate findings in a concise & clear manner and ability to work cross functionally with engineering, business development, and deployment personnel

Expected Compensation

$104,000 - $348,000/annual salary, depending on level + cash and stock awards + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
