Job Summary Department Purpose

Mathematics is a large research and service unit. Mathematics consists of 50 faculty, 11 Krener Assistant Professors, 32 other visiting titles, 6 active Emeriti, 130 Graduate Students, 700 Undergraduates, and 11 administrative and technical staff. Mathematics is a large service unit that teaches of 15,000 students per year.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, in collaboration with the lead Mathematics faculty advisor, provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students and administrative support to the Mathematics faculty, staff and College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Education Advising (L&S) on relevant undergraduate program matters. It is imperative that the Undergraduate Staff Advisor has a thorough understanding of the complexities of administering the department's undergraduate programs, including but not limited to relevant department and university policies, procedures & resources, course articulations with other colleges/universities, and college requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work in an area of heavy student interruptions and work at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Work occasional overtime including evenings, and weekends for department and outreach events including commencement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:
  • Experience advising and counseling undergraduate students in a university environment, knowledge of academic philosophies including advising, career placement centers available to students and services provided and general education program and its requirements.
  • Experience with registration procedures (SISWEB) and other information and forms available through the office of the Registrar and other campus units.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
  • Knowledge of degree requirement and mandatory advising system to prepare official major certifications, assist students with their academic plans and guide/track students through academic planning.
  • Skill to identify and determine appropriate level of advising or referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.
  • Knowledge of admissions criteria for new students; knowledge of articulation agreements with other universities/colleges for transfer students, and the applicability of credit for other institutions.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact tactfully and diplomatically with faculty, staff, students, and parents; to listen and respond to concerns and problems; and to comprehend the specialized needs of students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Management and organizational skills to set goals, plan, coordinate, evaluate, and initiate creative projects; to manage multiple priorities in a complex work environment and meet deadlines; and to work accurately under pressure and productively despite frequent interruptions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality of student records and knowledge of State and Federal Laws governing confidentiality of student records and University policies regarding privacy of Information.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
  • Familiarity with online course approval preparation and submission.
  • Skill to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and perspectives and make public presentations, both formal and informal.
