The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is recruiting a Student Assistant to join its in-use compliance team. The In-Use Compliance Section helps ensure that passenger cars, vans, and pick-up trucks, which are driven on real-world California roads, are complying with California's emission standards. The Student Assistant will collaborate with other staff in the section with tasks related to the implementation of CARB's in-use compliance programs. The duties of the Student Assistant will include monitoring and reviewing in-use test data submitted by vehicle manufacturers, archiving failures reported by manufacturers, and logging manufacturer requests related to in-use testing. The Student Assistant will also collaborate with section staff on vehicle testing projects by helping with test plan development, vehicle data collection, and test data analysis. Additional tasks may include assisting with the generation of test reports and summaries using spreadsheets, charts, graphs, and slides. This position will report directly to the Air Resources Supervisor.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location at their own expense.

The ideal candidate has an engineering or science background, strong analytical and communication skills, and excellent technical writing and presentation skills. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is required. The most competitive candidate is also highly motivated and enthusiastic, has the ability to work in an organized manner, and can communicate effectively with teammates and management. Successful candidates should be able to work independently and in a team setting with general guidance and supervision. Knowledge of vehicle emission control systems, vehicle emission testing,and California's vehicle emission regulations is an added bonus, but not a requirement.
