The MedStar National Rehabilitation Network student nurse externship program is designed to enhance your academic experience as an undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Student. Positions are offered in each specialty unit, depending on availability. Student Nurse Externs will participate in Educational Sessions, and other focused experiences. The program is an exceptional opportunity for student nurses to strengthen their nursing skills, build confidence and gain exposure to different nursing specialties in an acute inpatient rehabilitation setting.

Student Nurse Extern roles will be available in the following Units: Cardiac & Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury and Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit. This is an excellent way to build a relationship on the unit where you may like to start your career as a new to practice nurse!

Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN program and completed the Med/Surg Clinical rotation in a hospital setting. The incumbent should also be available for full-time employment and rotating shifts (weekend/ nights/ holidays included).

Cohort start date: December 16, 2024

Required Commitment: During your winter break, you will work 36 hours per week. This may be 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your school schedule. Once your classes begin for the spring semester, you may transition to working flexible per diem shifts leading up to graduation. Your schedule will include educational sessions for additional learning opportunity.

Hours: 3, 12-hour shifts (Days or Nights with rotating weekends)

Pay: $20.12 per hour

Education/Training: Active enrollment as a senior nursing student (or entering senior year) in an RN program; Official transcripts will be required at time of hire and at the end of each semester in order to validate active enrollment.

Experience: No clinical experience outside of nursing school experience required

License/Certification: BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification.
