Position Details

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Student Placement Specialist guides families through school choice decisions and assists schools in managing student enrollment.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
  • Serve as resource to students, families and district staff concerning enrollment options: residency and enrollment requirements, intra-district and inter-district transfers, alternative education, etc.
  • Review requests for intra-district transfers and petition transfers. Develop recommendations about placement, consulting with district staff as needed, for review and approval.
  • Assist with set-up and administration of annual school choice lottery: development of student application, correspondence to families, guidance for school staff and other functions as needed.
  • Review and make enrollment recommendations for students living with someone other than their parent or guardian, in compliance with state law.
  • Assist families and district personnel regarding inter-district student transfers by providing guidance on process and requirements.
  • Assist students, families and school staff with information and enrollment options during and after changes are made to school boundaries, program locations or grade configurations.
Education, Training and Experience:
  • An Associate’s degree and three (3) or more years of experience working in school setting.
  • Experience serving the needs of a culturally and linguistically diverse student and community population is highly desirable.
Any other combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the candidate is likely to possess the skill, knowledge, ability and trait characteristics essential for this classification may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft (Outlook, Word, Excel) and Google software applications.
  • Experience with K-12 student enrollment, transfer and/or program placement procedures. Knowledge of Synergy software preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail and accuracy of all data entry, correspondence, lists, reports, and agreements.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team setting. Willingness to share information and duties and support other staff.
  • Ability to work efficiently, multitask and cope with constant interruptions in an extremely fast paced job and department.
  • Experience at gathering information from multiple sources and constructing recommendations.
  • Bilingual/bi-literacy in Spanish, Chinese, Somali or Vietnamese languages preferred.

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and school setting and to routinely drive to and from District facilities; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and office equipment; sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; occasional kneeling, bending at the waist; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office equipment, computers, laptops and peripheral equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.

CLASSIFICATION AND SALARY:

This position is classified as Student Placement Specialist I, Pay Grade 18, on the Non-Represented, Confidential, Professional and Management Employees salary schedule FLSA Non-Exempt.

Salary Range:$67,254 - $80,304

Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer.
