General Information:

James Madison University is accepting applications for a Student and Family Outreach Coordinator for the Valley Scholars Program. The Valley Scholars Program provides outreach activities to first generation middle and high school students; engaging in educational enrichment activities designed to increase awareness and access to institutions of higher education. This position directly supports student growth and development while assisting families in identifying and accessing additional support services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Cultivate partnerships with local agencies and school systems for families seeking resources in support of students.
  • Identify community and academic resources to assist families in supporting student success.
  • Assess areas of student/ family need in relation to academic support and develop creative solutions to those challenges.
  • Identify strategies for engaging participant parents from diverse communities and backgrounds.
  • Prepare written and online communications from concept to publication for website, social media and newsletters.
  • Serve as program liaison with the College of Education Mentoring class in conjunction with the assigned teaching faculty.
  • Design and execute new student programming and orientation processes ensuring participant sense of belonging, and understanding of expectations and program values
  • Initiate outreach initiatives for participant families creating opportunities for direct dialogue, including innovative programming opportunities and college access resources.
  • Foster positive relationships with students and families in support of their educational goals.
  • Participate in team activities such as goal setting, problem solving, work scheduling and evaluating team effectiveness while supporting overarching program goals.
  • Develop strategies and programs to support student socio-emotional and mental health needs
  • Coordinate student academic advising with school partners and families.
  • Provide direct student support and accountability regarding program requirements and academic success from a holistic, strengths-based and student-centered lens.
  • Event development and management for families and students including learning objectives, learning outcomes, and coordinating university partners
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead effective workshops and programs supportive of families and student participants in the Valley Scholars Program.
Qualifications:

Required qualifications:
  • Experience in human services related field or experience working in college access programs
  • Experience working in a secondary or post-secondary educational setting
  • Ability to structure and develop educational and college readiness programs for middle and high school programs
  • Background working with and engaging students from multicultural identities
  • Flexible work schedule to include some weekend or evening hours
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Appropriately handle confidential material and have experience in communicating effectively with diverse and multicultural populations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism
  • Maintain a responsive communications environment for program constituents, while managing multiple priorities
Additional Considerations:
  • Knowledge of or experience working with educational database systems and K-12 instructional systems
  • Understanding of the college application and financial aid processes
  • Knowledge of academic advising processes
  • Experience leading positive collaborations with students, schools, administrators and/or the community
