Job Summary:

The Student Support Advisor is responsible for working with Student Support Services (SSS) students and SSS colleagues to meet grant objectives. Specifically, the advisor will provide advice and assistance for course selection, assist with financial and economic literacy, and provide individualized counseling for personal, career and academic needs. The Advisor will also conduct assessments that track student progress and implement interventions that offer support, motivation and guidance that assist participants in meeting their academic and career goals.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Conducts one-on-one advising sessions with approximately 160 students addressing academic, personal and career goals, discussing financial plans and financial literacy needs, and maintaining all records and documentation relevant to each student's needs and progress.
2. Addresses any situations of conflict or crisis by recommending on-site resources or making the appropriate referrals.
3. Recommends appropriate courses and course load based on student's degree goals, personal responsibilities and academic abilities.
4. Monitors individual academic progress by periodic 3 week and mid-semester follow up; meets with low academic performing students more consistently as part of academic success plans to ensure success.
5. Receives, processes, assesses and maintains all records and documentation relevant to each student's needs and progress ensuring confidentiality protocol is met.
6. Conducts workshops focused on study skills, degree plans and other related information geared toward student's academic success.
7. Develops programming to ensure student connection, foster sense-of-belonging and present students with increased resources and opportunities.
8. Supports SSS staff in executing new student orientation, and attends recruitment activities that expand the reach of SSS services to our target population on campus.
9. Builds networking relationships with personnel in the College of Education, faculty and staff across campus, TRiO communities, and other community stakeholders in order to best use referral resources available.
10. Meets regularly with Tutor Coordinator to ensure services rendered to low performing students are being maximized by SSS.
11. Meets regularly with SSS team to discuss implementation of interventions and Academic Success Plan (ASP) progress in order to meet overall program objectives.
12. Participates in on and off campus advising trainings to ensure the most current and relevant information is being distributed to SSS participants.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
• 2 years' experience in advising/counseling students in higher education or related field

Preferred Education & Experience:

• Master's degree in Counseling, Education and or related field. Experience working with TRiO students and/or working with first generation, low-income students and students with disabilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of issues relating to the success of 1st generation, low-income, and disabled students.
• Knowledge of core curriculum and degree requirements for graduation.
• Knowledge of university programs including major, minors and study abroad.
• Knowledge of establishing and maintaining databases for student records.
• Skill in the use of Microsoft Office software, specifically excel and other databases.
• Skill in the use of PeopleSoft or equivalent data records systems.
• Skill in effective written and oral communication
• Skill in interpersonal communication
• Ability to teach students study skills, time management and other useful techniques.
• Ability to conduct and facilitate personal, academic and group counseling/advising sessions.
• Ability to work with diverse populations and conduct presentations to a variety of audiences.
• Ability to formulate Academic Success Plans.
• Ability to build supportive relationships with students and staff.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• This role is an on campus, in-person position.
