ABOUT THE ROLE

The Substation Equipment Operator is responsible to assist in constructing and maintaining electric substations using necessary equipment. The Operator is responsible for inspecting and operating equipment, maintaining accurate records of equipment, work orders and associated reports.

Essential Functions
  • Operate equipment used for the installation of electric substation equipment to include skid steer, trencher, mini excavator, backhoe and forklift without supervision close to energized powerlines
    • Dig holes in areas inaccessible to digger derrick trucks by using a shovel or hole diggers for poles and anchors
    • Load and unload hardware used in electric substation construction
    • Ensure proper setup of substation equipment on the job site
  • Assist Electricians, Apprentices and Groundmen with all aspects in the construction and maintenance of electric substations
  • Load, unload, and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using proper equipment
  • Signal operators to guide movement of equipment used on project sites
  • Locate underground services, such as ground grids and wiring, prior to beginning work
  • Assist Right of Way crew as needed; remove brush and trees from line right of way as needed
  • Develop working knowledge of tools and hardware used in an electric utility system and maintain equipment readiness
  • Observe work area to identify possible hazards to personnel present and maintain a clean worksite
    • Assist in ensuring that all equipment is in safe working condition and report problems promptly
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Essential functions of this position are to be performed at a Company-designated office or field location
  • Understand and comply with the Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics Policy and other industry-specific professional and ethical standards

ABOUT YOU

Qualifications
  • Class A Commercial driver's license is required
  • Experience with setting transformers and other equipment with limited spacing
  • Experience evaluating lift and load capacity of equipment
  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating construction equipment
  • High school diploma or GED

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Proven ability to safely operate skid steers, mini excavators, backhoes, trenchers, mini excavators, and forklifts around energized electric lines
  • Ability to adhere to department rules, regulations, policies and follow safety rules
  • Basic knowledge of electric substation operations
  • Working knowledge of safety precautions and occupational hazards of working within electric substations
  • Ability to speak and hear in order to communicate oral instructions or warnings to electrical workers
  • Good reading, writing and math skills
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Work in locations containing both energized and de-energized power lines
  • Maintain stamina and physical ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions for extended periods
  • Mobility to perform the required tasks, including ability and agility to pull heavy wire, lift tools and materials by handline; lift and pick up items
  • Ability to work overtime, nonstandard hours, and weekends as needed

  • Salary Commensurate with experience, paid weekly.
